Jerry Kerr
Jerry Kerr

Even as late as 1958/59 the Tannadice club had finished 35th out of Scotland's 37 League clubs, but the appointment of Jerry Kerr as manager in the summer of 1959 saw the beginning of a quite remarkable transformation in United's fortunes.

Within a year United were back in the First Division and immediately shot to their best ever league position - ninth. With the exception of 1995/96 season, United have not only remained in the top drawer since but have prospered to become one of Scotland's leading clubs.

The sixties were highlighted by the playing skills of the some notable imports from Scandinavia, Orjan Persson, Finn Seemann, Lennart Wing, Finn Dossing and Mogens Berg. These players helped give United their first taste of the European scene upon which they sensationally burst as they eliminated the mighty Barcelona who were the holders of the Fairs Cup. Juventus were to put paid to any further ambitions then, but Europe was a stage United were set to grace with such style on innumerable occasions in the future.

Promotion at last! Ron Yeats and his team-mates are mobbed as a 1-0 win over Berwick Rangers ensures the return of First Division football to Tannadice for the first time in 28 years

In December 1971, Jim McLean took over from Jerry Kerr and so the modern and most successful era in the club's history began.
