Guido VAN DE KAMP (born 1964)
A member of United’s first Scottish Cup-winning squad and a major contributor to that triumph, his safe and often spectacular goalkeeping denying Rangers an equaliser at Hampden Park.
Having joined from Dutch club BVV Den Bosch at the bargain price of only £40,000 in July 1991, he had to await an injury to Alan Main before making his debut. Guido then enjoyed an extensive run during 1992/93, but had reverted to second choice when the following season began. Indeed he had yet to make a first-team appearance that season when Main was again injured in January 1994, but from that point the tall Dutchman never looked back.
Ironically, the Cup final turned out to be his last game for the club. He became embroiled in a contract dispute and eventually returned to Holland, able only to play amateur football. More than a year later he returned to Scotland, Dunfermline having paid United a nominal fee, and he won a championship medal as his new club edged out his old one in the race for the 1995/96 First Division title. Despite that, he could not command a place on the club’s return to the Premier Division and was given a free transfer in June 1997, following which he remained in Fife, joining Raith Rovers then Alloa Athletic.

Freddy VAN DER HOORN (born 1963)
Freddy joined United at the start of the 1989/90 season, for a reported fee of £200,000 from Den Bosch, and became an instant hit with the fans. Making his first appearance in Paul Sturrock's testimonial against Real Sociedad, Freddy replaced the departing Paul Hegarty in the heart of United's defence, and missed only 13 games in his first three seasons with United, forming partnerships with Dave Narey and Miodrag Krivokapic. He scored five goals during his time at Tannadice and made a couple of appearances in United's run to the successful 1994 Scottish Cup final. However, he fell out of favour with manager Ivan Golac and left soon after, joining the Belgian league club Eendracht Aalst.
