Local boy Garry was noticed at a young age while attending Jim McLean's Coaching School and playing for Dundee Schoolboys, and came up through the ranks at United, playing regularly at Under-17, Youth, Under-19 and Under-21 levels. He also gained International recognition, appearing for Scotland Under-19's and Under-20's, and found himself on United's first team substitute bench, although not used, by May 2004.
Garry continued to appear on the subs’ bench during the 2004-05 season, and was finally called into first team action when he came on in a 3-0 win over Queen of the South in the Scottish Cup. Garry became a first team regular for the last 12 games, appearing at Hampden twice for the semi-final and final of the Scottish Cup, playing with composure beyond his years.
Garry found it hard to hold down a regular place in the United defence during the 2005-06 season, but finished the season strongly, appearing in 10 of the final 11 matches as United finished 9th in the SPL. At the end of that season Garry was part of the U19 Scotland squad that reached the finals of the UEFA U19’s Championship in Poland in 2006, where the team nearly went all the way, narrowly losing out to Spain in the final.
Garry again struggled to break into the first time throughout the 2006-07 season, but signed an extended three year deal to keep him at Tannadice until 2010. In new manager Craig Levein's first game in charge, Garry made only his 3rd start of the season against Rangers at Tannadice, and scored with a header in a memorable 2-1 win at Tannadice. He went on to play a further 10 games that season, also scoring against St Mirren at Tannadice in the Scottish Cup, before being loaned out to Cowdenbeath until the end of the campaign for some first team match experience. Garry was also selected for the Scotland squad to play in the Under 20 FIFA World Cup Finals in Canada.
During the 2007-08 season Garry was used as a more than able deputy for central defenders Lee Wilkie and Darren Dods, and by March he had forced his way into a run of appearances in the first team. He played in all 5 games that month, and received his second runners-up medal after a superb performance in the League Cup Final against Rangers at Hampden. He finished the season making 20 appearances, and scored once, in the 3-0 victory over Gretna at Fir Park.
It was a similar story for the 2008-09 season, with Garry even displacing Darren Dods in the centre of defence for spells at the beginning and mid point of the season. This and the addition of 3 substitute appearances took his match total for the season to 29 appearances, and he also scored in the 2-2 draw with Hibs at Tannadice, with Garry’s goal acting as the catalyst in United’s come back from two goals down.
With the long term injury, and eventual retiral of captain Lee Wilkie, Garry competed with Darren Dods and loan signing Andy Webster throughout the 2009-10 season. Garry was used mainly as cover in the first half of the season, also playing at right back on at least one occasion, in a match against Hamilton at Tannadice in which he kept up his goal a season record by scoring the equaliser in the last minute.
But from December until the end of the season Garry missed only 3 matches, making one of the centre half spots his own, and was a vital player to the team that finished 3rd in the SPL and missed only one match of United’s successful Scottish Cup run. After the disappointment of losing out in Final’s at Hampden in 2005 and 2008, Garry finally got his hands on the silverware at the end of the campaign as United beat Ross County 3-0 in the Final.
Garry was also selected for the full Scotland squad to face the Czech Republic in February 2010, for a friendly international match at Hampden.
