United secured a dramatic late draw at home to Hamilton in a repeat of last year’s meeting between the two sides, with a 93rd minute Garry Kenneth header cancelling out a Mikhael Antoine-Curier strike.

It took a stoppage time own goal for United to snatch a point when the Accies visited Tannadice last season, and just as it looked as though the home side would suffer a shock defeat, another injury time goal meant the Arabs could go home relatively happy with a draw.

Hamilton took the lead 20 minutes into the second half when Antoine-Curier scored from what looked to be an offside position, but the Tangerines showed great spirit to get a deserved point.

United were without Scott Robertson and Paul Dixon through injury and Prince Buaben and Danny Swanson through suspension, meaning starts for David Robertson, Jennison Myrie-Williams and short-term signing Mark Fotheringham, while Kenneth was deployed at left-back with Sean Dillon at right back.

Myrie-Williams and Craig Conway would provide the support for loan striker Damien Casalinuovo in a 4-5-1 formation.

The home started the game brightly with Fotheringham and Morgaro Gomis looking lively in the middle of the park, and it was the latter who almost gave the home side the lead midway through the first half.

The Senegal international collected the ball some 30 yards out and unleashed a powerful drive towards goal, only for Tomas Cerny to parry the ball away.
From the resulting corner, Darren Dods saw his goal-bound header cleared off the line.

United had another chance moments later, when Jennison Myrie-Williams picked up the ball on the right wing, cut inside his man, and curled the ball just past the top corner.

Hamilton, however, looked dangerous from set pieces and it was from a corner that they almost took an unlikely lead. The ball was whipped in by Marco Paixao, but Nicky Weaver pulled of a brilliant diving save to beat the ball out.

The Accies gradually came into the game, but never looked like scoring, until the stroke of half-time when former United loanee James Wesolowski cut the ball back to Paixao, only for the Portuguese winger to balloon the ball over the bar.

In the second half, neither side created much in way of clear-cut chances, but Billy Reid’s side almost took the lead when Paixao's audacious 35-yard free-kick dipped onto the crossbar after Weaver had strayed too far off his line.

The visitors did go in front in the 65th minute when the ball was played through to Antoine-Curier who looked to be offside, but there was no flag and the on-loan Dundee striker slotted the ball past Weaver to a chorus of boos.

The goal sparked Craig Levein’s men into action and they pressed for the equaliser.

In the closing stages, the Terrors were denied twice in quick succession when Casalinuovo headed off the post and Dods crashed the rebound on to the bar.

Fotheringham also went close with a 20-yard drive that went inches wide in stoppage-time.

But United’s persistence paid off when Casalinuovo crossed and Kenneth towered above the Hamilton defence to head home at the far post – to the delight of the home support.

Manager Craig Levein said: "I'd like to take full points in every home match and I thought we deserved to win the game on chances.

But we had eleven players unavailable and when we're going through a period like this we have to just hang in there.

"We did that and we got a point out a game that we could have easily lost.

“We didn't flow as we usually do, we didn't pass the ball as well and, all things considered, it's not a bad point."

Accies boss Billy Reid said: "To lose a goal in the 93rd minute is really devastating for our players.

"We came here last season and were within 30 seconds of a win and we had five minutes of injury time again.

"I thought most of the game was fairly even, with two teams really going for it in a hard battle.

"After we got the goal United made changes and they bang the ball back-to-front and make it really hard for you."

Man of the match: In a rare start, Jennison Myrie-Williams showed the United fans what he is capable of with a fine display of pace and skill on the wing – creating chances and coming close to scoring himself.
