There was one enforced change made by Peter Houston for the league visit of Hamilton Accies as Paul Dixon missed out through injury after hobbling off with ten minutes remaining of the weekend Cup win at McDiarmid Park. Newest recruit Pavels Mihadjuks was thrown straight into the starting line-up to play at right back with Sean Dillon switching over to the left in a defensive shake-up. Andy Webster was still not fit enough to play therefore Darren Dods and Garry Kenneth continued as the central defensive partnership. It was a hugely important game for both sides, with United looking to keep up the pressure on third placed Hibs and Hamilton desperately fighting for points having slipped to the bottom of the table after the last round of fixtures.
First Half:
United threatened inside the first couple of minutes as a through ball from Gomis was neatly flicked into the path of Daly by Goodwillie, however the early shot from the Irishman was straight at Hamilton goalkeeper Tomas Cerny. Daly again had an attempt minutes later as Conway broke out of midfield and slipped the ball into his path but this time the shot rebounded off a defender for a throw. Overall it was a tentative opening from both sides but Jon Daly created another chance on 14 minutes as he controlled the ball and scooped a shot over the bar following a Conway set piece. The game was in desperate need of a spark but unfortunately for United it came at the wrong end as Hamilton went into the lead out of the blue. A searching ball into the box by McClenahan found its way to the feet of Flavio Paixao and his shot was mishit slightly as it looped high into the net with Dusan Pernis rooted to the spot. It was close to becoming an uphill struggle for United as moments later a corner caused confusion in the box but thankfully the defence were able to clear the ball at the 2nd attempt. As the game edged towards half time and the terrors struggled to get any momentum going the visitors again went close through David Elebert, this time the defender’s shot curled narrowly over the bar as Pernis watched closely. United looked to be heading into the break with only a single goal deficit to deal with but right on the stroke of half time the Paixao brothers combined to put the visitors 2-0 ahead. Firstly Flavio saw a header saved by Pernis from six yards before Marco poked the ball high into the net much to the dismay of all but the tiny handful of Hamilton supporters inside the ground.
Half Time Summary:
Apart from a few early Jon Daly openings the Tangerines hadn’t managed to get going at all and to be fair to Hamilton they had looked more comfortable whilst in possession and much of the game had been played out in the United half. If the hosts were to have any chance of turning the game around they would firstly need to win the battle in midfield and then start creating chances.
Second Half:
Something needed to change drastically for United and with that in mind Peter Houston withdrew Daly and Conway in place of Casalinuovo and Myrie-Williams at half time. There was a great chance for Prince Buaben after 51 minutes when good work by Goodwillie on the left followed by a well timed cut back resulted in the Ghanaian lifting the ball high over from six yards out. Andis Shala was thrown on up front in place of Mihadjuks as Houston went for broke with a 3-4-3 formation with just over half an hour left and immediately Shala could have put his team back in it, but Cerny saved superbly from his close range header. Gomis then set up Goodwillie inside the box and the striker brought out a decent save from Cerny with his low drive. A driving run from Myrie-Williams ended in a foul at the edge of the box which allowed Swanson the chance to make a United breakthrough but his free kick dipped just over the bar in the 67th minute before Myrie-Williams then struck a decent shot from 20 yards which sailed just over. After looking like working their way back into the game for a spell after half time the game just petered out again as Hamilton went on to take a deserved three points and deal a blow to the Tangerines' European aspirations.
Full Time Summary:
It was simply a night to forget for United. Despite performing better in the second half the damage done prior to that was too much for them to recover from after producing what was their worst performance of the season at Tannadice.
Man of the match: David Goodwillie. He kept trying to work the Hamilton defence all night and despite limited space and time did worry them on a few occasions.
