After a fine win over Aberdeen the previous weekend, Craig Levein made four changes for the CIS Cup quarter final tie against local rivals St Johnstone in Perth. Andy Webster appeared recovered from flu whilst there were staring berths for David Goodwillie, Danny Swanson and goalkeeper Steve Banks. Making way were Dods, Casalinuovo, Myrie-Williams and Nicky Weaver. First Half: A fine United support had made the short journey to McDiarmid Park but from the kick-off they saw their side on the back foot. With four minutes on the clock, the visitors really should have been ahead when Liam Craig picked out Deuchar who was unmarked on the six-yard line however the former Gretna man headed wide. Saints had handed a debut to former Hibs man Jonaton Johansson and with ten minutes gone he went close after being set up by Chris Millar. Steve Banks then made an outstanding save from a headed effort from Deuchar however the linesman had ruled the striker to be in an offside position. On the quarter hour mark United made their first chance when Goodwillie created space for himself after a fine run but his shot was deflected and gathered by Graeme Smith in the Saints goal. Goodwillie then tried his luck again but this time his shot was blocked by former United man Danny Grainger. On the 20 minute mark Goodwillie's strike partner Danny Cadamarteri wrong footed the Saints defence and he fired in a shot that narrowly missed the target. Five minutes later United's Sean Dillon played a fantastic pass over the Saints defence to find Swanson in the penalty box but after controlling well the recalled midfielder smashed the ball over the crossbar. Saints then hit back and the influential Craig set up Johansson who failed to connect properly. United were playing some decent passing football and twice had good moves that failed to produce an opener. Firstly Cadamarteri teed up Goodwillie and then seconds later a fine run and pass from Fotheringham failed to find a tangerine shirt in the penalty area. Five minutes before the break Deuchar had another good chance for the hosts when a Grainger free kick landed at the feet of the big striker but he shot wide with the goal gaping. Half Time Summary: United started slowly but did come back into the game and had plenty possession without creating any real clear cut chances. Second Half:
At the start of the second half, Andy Webster who was still feeling the effects of the flu, was replaced by Darren Dods. Five minutes after the break Saints had a great opportunity when a long throw from Grainger found the head of Murray Davidson but he headed over from close range. Four minutes later the travelling support were screaming for a penalty when Cadamarteri went down in the box after a challenge from Rutkiewicz but referee Steve Conroy waved play on. Saints youngster Chris Miller then had a long range effort that failed to trouble Banks. Just after the hour mark Saints made a double substitution when firstly Anderson came on for Rutkiewicz and then Sheerin made way for Morais. Within minutes of coming on Anderson made a dramatic impact. Sean Dillon failed to clear for United and this resulted in a corner kick for the hosts. Craig swung in a cross and the unmarked Anderson left Banks with no chance with a powerful header. United's goal hero from the weekend Damian Casalinuovo then came on for Fotheringham but within seconds Saints doubled their lead. After a conceded a free kick, a fine Craig cross into the danger zone United failed to clear and Dods turned the ball into his own net. With time running out for United, Conway came on for Swanson. With nine minutes remaining United were handed a life line when Casalinuovo set up Kovacevic who in turn found the head of Prince Buaben whose looping header beat the outstretched Smith. United then threw everyone forward in the search for an equaliser and they could have been awarded a penalty when Grainger looked to have handled in the penalty box but play was again waved on. In the closing stages Moon came on for Johansson for the Perth men and then with seconds left the ball landed at the feet of Garry Kenneth who was so unlucky to see his volley just clear the crossbar. Summing Up: A disappointing night for United on the back of a great result at the weekend. In the end the home side were holding on but unfortunately probably merited their place in the last four of the cup. Man of the match: Garry Kenneth. He put in a solid performance for visitors.
