John began his footballing career with Brechin City Boys Club before being spotted by United, and then came up through the youth programme at Tannadice, being part of the Under 15s squad that won the 2008 Aberdeen International Football Festival. He appeared regularly for the Under 17 and Under 19 teams before signing a professional contract in July 2012.

After just four months of appearing for the Under 20s, the quick skilful defender was called up to the first team squad in January 2013 due to injuries and suspensions, and made his first team debut in the 2-2 draw with Aberdeen at Pittodrie at the age of just 16. At the end of January John, along with childhood friend Ryan Gauld, signed a contract extension tying him to United until 2016. For the next couple of months he was playing regularly for the Under 20s as well as appearing on the bench as an unused sub for the first team, and was called into action again in April when he replaced the injured Brian McLean in a 1-1 draw with St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.

John was a regular in the starting eleven from then on until the end of the season, gaining much experience and praise, performing well in United's 1-0 win over Aberdeen to finish in the top six of the SPL, and the teams epic battle with Celtic in the Scottish Cup Semi Final at Hampden Park. In his first full season as a professional player, John had made 9 first team starts for United, and had earned a call up to the Scotland Under 19 squad, all before his 17th birthday.
