Paul Sturrock

Over the next two years Paul began to wind down his playing career and his appearances were limited to less than twenty. In his last Scottish Cup final he did not play, being the unused sub as Celtic grabbed victory with two late goals. His last goal for the Club came on 8th April 1989. Fittingly this was against old rivals Dundee against whom he had netted so often in the past, and where all of his major triumphs had culminated. Five weeks later he played his last game for the Tangerines but it was an anti-climax with United losing at home to Hamilton.

Paul stayed at Tannadice for the next five years, where he was able to pass on his knowledge in the role of coach, from the summer of 1989. He left the Club in 1993 after twenty years continuous service. Even without that remarkable achievement Luggy is a legendary figure at Tannadice. His final tally of 576 games in which he scored 171 goals makes him the top attacking player of all time at Tannadice. Although he is now managing Plymouth Argyle in the south east corner of England, he is still welcomed back at Tannadice, his spiritual home. He is still and always will be an Arab at heart.
