DEVOS BIDS TURNED DOWN

14th August 2000

United confirmed on Monday that they have turned down two bids from English First Division side Sheffield Wednesday for skipper Jason de Vos.

Wednesday, now managed by ex-Bradford boss Paul Jewel, have been watching de Vos for some time now and there has been speculation a third bid will be forthcoming this week. However, for the time being at least De Vos, currently in Mexico on World Cup duty with Canada, is unlikely to be moving away permanently.

Manager Alex Smith has made it clear that while he would consider any offer that came in, if selling a player would weaken his side, he would not do it. "At this moment we could not contemplate selling Jason because we do not have a replacement for him."

That might change if Danny Griffin returns to fitness this week and the manager has pointed out that there are other talented central defenders on the books. "I thought David McCracken was outstanding against Motherwell on Saturday and I think we have still to see the best of David Partridge at this club."

Staying with Saturday, Alex was pleased with the determination of the team as they fought back to draw against Motherwell, his first game in charge. "I was happy with the attitude of the boys and felt it was a positive start and something we can build on," he said.
