UNITED SIGN OLYMPIC STAR MVONDO

31st August 2000

Dundee United completed a hat-trick of signings in little over a week today when Manager Alex Smith snapped up Cameroon Olympic star Mvondo Atangana on a long-term deal. The 21-year-old striker - formerly of Tonnerre Kalara in Cameroon - joins countryman Alphonse Tchami and Stephen Wright as Alex continues to build the United squad.

United had opened negotiations with the internationalist and terms were agreed late last night following talks between Chairman Jim McLean, Alex Smith and the player. Alex had dashed back to Dundee from training at Largs with the Scotland Under-21s to conclude the deal and will today fly out to Latvia with the international squad.

New signing Mvondo will be following his new Manager to the airport later today. He is due to start training with the Cameroon Olympic squad in Paris tomorrow - but has told United he is desperate to return to make his debut in the CIS Cup tie against Airdrie at Tannadice next week.

It is possible that United could field an all-Cameroon attack in Tuesday's clash with the Diamonds with Mvondo forming a partnership with Alphonse Tchami. As well as picking up a host of caps at Under-21 level with Cameroon, Mvondo has been capped at full international level.
