DEVOS TO RETURN AGAINST RANGERS

29th September 2000

The nasty head knock suffered by United central defender Stephen Wright has robbed Tannadice boss Alex Smith of a chance to reassess a new defensive partnership in Sunday's clash with Rangers at Ibrox.

Smith was relishing pairing experienced Wright with returning skipper Jason de Vos in the Ibrox pressure clash. However the recently introduced rule relating to an enforced absence following a head injury, rules that out. Said Smith,"It is frustrating not to be able to field the pair together, as I feel that they could do a solid job for us in a vital area of the side. The continued absence of summer signing Danny Griffin compounds the disappointment as I believe that the three of them could combine to bring stability at the back".

Wright's Ibrox miss is covered by the returns of de Vos from suspension and Hasney Aljofree from injury, while Greek midfielder Tassos Venetis comes back into contention for a starting role. Also included in Smith's selection thoughts for the tilt at the champions is new Argentinian striker Gustavo Fuentes, signed last week from Honduran club Motagua. Final clearance is being sought to enable the South American his big chance.

Alex Smith recognises his side's weekend task, "It is never easy at Ibrox, but we have to get started somewhere-and where better than there."
