HONDURAS TRIO SIGNED

22nd September 2000

United boss Alex Smith strengthened his squad further on Friday afternoon when he completed the signings of Latin Americans Gustavo Fuentes, Francisco Ramirez and Reynaldo Clavasquin from Honduran champions Motagua. Argentinian striker Fuentes should be available to play early next week because he has a Spanish passport and although Honduran international skipper Clavasquin and Ramirez will require work permits, it is hoped they will be granted soon.

When they are freed to play, the trio will go straight into Alex's first team squad. "They have been playing regularly and at a good standard and I will have no hesitation calling them into the first team group," he said. "All three are technically very good players and I believe Fuentes and Ramirez can help us get the goals we need up front, while Clavasquin can do a job at the back or possibly even in midfield."

The new men will be spectators at Tannadice tomorrow as United take on Aberdeen, a game Alex is determined to see his team win. "We were disappointed at losing to Dundee on Wednesday, but if we can take the first half performance from Dens as well as the final hour against St Mirren last Saturday into this game, we will have a very good chance. Skipper Jason de Vos misses out through suspension, but Stephen Wright is available after a one match ban.
