Even the 24-hour deluge to have swamped Tayside failed to dampen Alex Smith's enthusiasm for the city derby week at Tannadice.
He ordered double-sessions for both his top team squad and his 'fringe' men as he sought to maintain concentration for the task ahead against Dundee on Saturday. While many have highlighted the suspension losses of both Jason de Vos and Jim Lauchlan as blows, boss Smith reckons that he is sufficiently well covered in the central defensive department.
He said, "David Partridge and John Licina can fill those roles, while Hasney Aljofree is another who can step in as required. David McCracken also proved that he is back fully fit again in a specially-arranged closed-doors game at Gussie Park. That game also gave me the opportunity of assessing both of the trialists who would have played in the rained-off Under-21 fixture."
The two trialists, Icelandic striker Thorim Kristjansson and a mystery winger from England, did well enough to maintain a United interest in extending their guest spells at Tannadice.
