And having dominated almost throughout, the Tannadice side ought to have won far more comfortably.

The goal that decided it came after 13 minutes when James Keatings was played in and fired a left-footed drive into the far corner.

Six minutes later, Killie had just about their only real chance of the game, Will Graham dragging his shot wide from a good position.

But most of the action was at the other end.

A good effort from Logan Chalmers was tipped over by Curtis Lyle, a Durnan header went narrowly past and a Scott Allardice attempt was deflected inches past.

Not quite so many chances fell United’s way after the break, but they were unlucky not to score when Joe Piggott couldn’t get enough purchase on a Louis Appere cut-back.

Dundee United: Donaldson, Toshney (Ritchie 61), Dailly, Allardice, Davidson, Durnan, Chalmers, Flood, Piggott (Hornby 70), Fraser (Appere 50), Keatings.

Subs not used: Thomas, Reekie, Glass, Inglis.
