UNITED SUPPORT CITY CYCLATHON

28th August 2019

Club Captain Mark Reynolds and Sam Stanton were pleased to show the Club’s support for the forthcoming Dundee Cyclathon on Sunday, 15 September at the Dundee United High Perfomance Centre at St Andrews University earlier this week, encouraging supporters to sign up for the 26 mile Full Cyclathon or for the brand new 10 km Mini-Cyclathon, featuring for the first time this year.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Claverhouse, this great event is a fun day out for families and all those who enjoy cycling. It is not a race. Cyclathon Medals and a gift from SAMH are awarded to all those who pass the finishing line who also have the chance of winning a framed T- shirt signed by Sir Chris Hoy.

Club Captain Mark Reynolds said, “We are really proud to lend our support to the Dundee Cyclathon which is a fantastic event. What a great way to raise funds not only for SAMH but for other very worthy local causes which are all in need of funds to enable them to support those who are less fortunate than ourselves.”

Beginning and ending at Camperdown Park, entrants have the opportunity to raise money for SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health) or for a charity of their choice. The Full Cyclathon, starting at 10.30am, follows the Dundee Green Circular Cycle Route which circumnavigates the city and the Mini-Cyclathon, starting at 11.30am, involves 3 laps around the periphery of Camperdown Park.

Open to all ages and abilities, organisers of the event stress that it will be a day of fun, a celebration of the joy of cycling and the chance to support those charities dear to us all.

Stewart Davidson, Co-organiser of the Cyclathon, said, “The Dundee Cyclathon is suitable for everyone. For me, I get a real thrill from seeing riders, who have never cycled 26 miles before, but they always finish. When they cross that finishing line, their sense of achievement and beaming smiles say it all.

“It is a very safe, well organised event designed to appeal to families, groups and individuals from all walks of life. You don’t have to be super fit and you can take your time going around the course which is well supplied with marshalls and water stations.”

Brian Cairns,  event Co-organiser, added, “We deliberately chose SAMH as our nominated charity because cycling promotes healthy mental and physical wellbeing. The thrill of getting out on the bike allows you cast off your troubles and enjoy the exhilaration of a bike ride. It is one of the best therapies going for good mental and physical health.”
