CHALMERS ENJOYS DESERVED CALL UP

14th October 2020

The name Logan Chalmers may have been on the lips of United fans for a number of years since making his debut as a 17-year-old in 2017 but it is performances this season that have caught the eye as he has become a regular in Micky Mellon’s starting line-ups.

That form earned Our Academy graduate Logan a call-up for the recent Scotland under-21 matches and the attacker made his debut at this level in the 7-0 rout of San Marino. Logan had previously represented Scotland and Under-15 and Under-17 levels.

Logan joined Our Academy as a 10-year-old before signing his first professional contract in July 2016. His competitive debut took place in the League Cup against Cowdenbeath in 2017 before he scored his first goal with a late winner over Linfield in the Challenge Cup that same season.

This season has saw Logan start seven games and come on in three more and although he has yet to add to his three goals for the Club he has been a vital part of the team with a man-of-the-match level performance in the win over St Mirren in our last home Premiership game.

That form has seen Logan rewarded with a call-up to the Under-21 squad and Assistant Manager Steve Frail was full of praise for the player and Our Academy coaches saying: “It’s fantastic for Logan and great for the Club. It is also great for all the coaches who have invested time into his development. We have a great Academy here and this is great read for a team effort.

“He should have been called up to the original squad in my opinion having played regular Premiership football to a high standard all season. We had spoke to people at the Scottish FA early in the campaign and pointed out that we think he deserved a shout of a call up and Scot Gemmill and I had chat and he was very complimentary of Logan and has worked with him before and knew how good he was.

“Logan has shown that the door is open at first team level and internationally and we want other players at youth level to continue to push for the first-team and international recognition. There is nothing better than that for a Club, it is what we are all about.”

Logan flew back into Edinburgh last night and we grabbed a few words with him after he landed. The exciting winger said: “I really enjoyed being away with the Under-21’s for the first time and enjoyed the experience of playing at international level. I was really happy to make my debut at this level and I look forward to keeping involved.

“Right now, my focus is on getting back and performing for Dundee United. This has been a great season personally so far and I want to continue to improve and develop at club level and help United to keep moving forward.”
