NEWLY REBRANDED DUNDEE UNITED PARA-SPORTS CLUB

5th February 2021

Dundee United Community Trust is committed to providing opportunities for those living with a disability to participate in sport and physical activity.

It recognises and understands there is a lack of opportunities for people with disabilities to take part in sport in general, not just in football and in the build up to Dundee United Para-Football Club’s second anniversary, the project has been rebranded as Dundee United Para-Sports Club.

Dundee United Para-Football Club launched on 15 February 2019 with three sessions taking place: Children’s Physical Disability Football, Amputee Football for adults and a football session for adults living with ill mental health.  The number of sessions, members and partners has increased significantly in the two years since and our work in para-football was recognised last year as the 'Best Para-Football Project' in the Scottish FA East Region’s 2020 Grassroots Awards.

As Dundee United Para-Football Club continues to grow, so does the demand for additional para-sports provision.  To ensure we can provide as many opportunities as possible for those living with a disability to participate in sport and physical activity, Dundee United Para-Sports Club will be incorporating new para-sports to the project in the coming months.  In recent months, our staff have completed coaching courses for various Paralympic sports, including boccia and goalball, and whilst we plan on offering opportunities in other sports, we will continue to expand our para-football offering too.

Paul Wilson, Head of Community Development, commented: “We understand that football isn’t for everyone, so we have been working on providing other sports for some time now.  We are excited to confirm that, in the next few months, we will be delivering a brand-new athletics programme specifically for people with a disability.  Changing to Dundee United Para-Sports Club reaffirms our commitment to providing opportunities for those living with a disability to take part in sport and physical activity, not just in football but in various other sports too.”
