DUWFC TOP THE LEAGUE

10th October 2021

Dundee United became outright leaders in the Scottish Women’s Premier League Two on Sunday after victory in Edinburgh.

Despite going behind to an Elvie McLean penalty, Jade McLaren and Chloe Clemison turned the game on its head to give United all three points over Boroughmuir Thistle.

Graeme Hart was forced into four changes from the draw with Glasgow a fortnight ago as Neve Guthrie, Steffi Simson, Aaliyah-Jay Meach and Rebecca McMillan replaced Todd, Cowper, Perry and Ross.

The game got off to a slow start with Boroughmuir looking the brighter side as Elvie McLean’s teasing ball caused problems inside the box before being cleared by Rebecca Foote.

In the eleventh minute Danni McGinley was give time and space at the edge of the box but her low effort was held by Moodie.

The hosts were awarded a penalty after twenty minutes when Meach and Sammy Duncan collided challenging for a loose ball. McLean stepped up and slotted home the spot kick despite the keeper getting a hand to it.

Neve Guthrie almost pulled United level straight away but her shot from the edge of the box forced a great save.

Smith fired over from a McLaren free kick however the duo were to be involved in United’s equaliser nine minutes before the break.

A corner was sent towards the back post by Smith and McLaren rose highest to head home and level the scores going into half time.

McLaren came close to putting the side ahead just after the restart; another Smith corner was pushed into the air but neither the scorer nor Clemison could divert the loose ball into the net.

Boroughmuir threatened to go back in front with McLean forcing a good save from Meach before Todd sliced wide shortly after.

United had chances of their own around the hour mark when the ball broke to Steffi Simson but she blasted wide.

Guthrie also couldn’t find the target before Brogan Anderson was denied by Meach in the 64th minute at the other end.

With thirteen minutes left United edged themselves in front and it was almost a carbon copy of their equaliser; Smith’s corner was punched into the air by Moodie and Chloe Clemison was on hand to head home her second of the season.

The remainder of the game saw both sides push for another goal but at full time there was only one side taking the points and it was Graeme Hart’s side.
