UNITED NEAR TO FULL STRENGTH FOR MOTHERWELL TRIP

11th January 2002

An exciting match is in prospect tomorrow when United take to the road travelling west to Fir Park Motherwell. The Lanarkshire side got back on track on Wednesday when they defeated Dundee 4-2. Both sides have plenty to play for with Motherwell aiming to close the gap on United to just one point while the Tangerines try to both put distance between themselves and the sides below them in the table while closing the gap on the top six.

United Manager Alex Smith has witnessed a week where a cold virus has been at work in the dressing room. "Half the players complained of having a heavy cold, the type of thing that goes with this time of the year," commented Alex. "Most of the lads have now recovered and with the exception of Danny Griffin through injury and Jamie Fullarton through suspension, we have a full squad."

"The Motherwell match is always a difficult fixture as Dundee found out earlier this week and we know we will be in for a tough game. This match has great significance for us. It would not only create a greater gap between us and our opponents tomorrow but it would push us towards the top six."

Alex is delighted to have a clutch of players who have been out for some time, back and becoming increasingly match fit. "We have managed to get key players such as Lilley, McIntyre and Wright as well as Fullarton back recently and this has provided me with greater options in terms of team selection and style of play. As well as the comeback of these four very experienced players, we have still managed to introduce young Mark Wilson and Stephen O'Donnell into the first team squad. The changes at the Club have been the main focus of attention this week. Now we have to look forward and concentrate on the playing side and hopefully take this club back to the higher echelons of the SPL."
