Dundee United are delighted to announce the signing of Max Watters on a season-long loan from EFL League One outfit Barnsley.
Born in Camden, the striker kicked-off his footballing journey in non-league, turning out for local sides East Thurrock, Barking and Ashford United.
A goal-laden stint with the latter caught the attention of Doncaster Rovers, then battling at the top end of the third tier, who swooped for Watters in the summer of 2018.
After two years in South Yorkshire, Crawley Town offered the Englishman his first opportunity to taste regular action in the professional game - a chance which he grasped with both hands.
Watters began life at Broadfield Stadium in scintillating form, netting on 13 occasions across his first 15 matches in red, and scooping the League Two Player of the Month trophy for December 2020 in the process.
Our new number 10 also secured the first hat-trick of his career during his time with the Red Devils, sinking Barrow with three strikes in a 4-2 triumph.
Turning heads with his prolificacy, the frontman’s burgeoning displays earned a move to the second step of the EFL Pyramid, as he linked up with Cardiff City in the 2021 winter transfer window.
He added another seven strikes to his ever-growing tally during a temporary spell with MK Dons to bolster their promotion push, and was re-called early by the Bluebirds to strengthen the ranks for the run-in.
Watters marked his return to Wales by opening his account for Mark Hudson’s men in a Championship clash with Bristol City.
January 2023 marked the beginning of a three-season association with Barnsley, initially heading to Oakwell on loan for the remainder of the term before making a permanent switch six months later having fired the Tykes into the promotion play-offs.
Since, our 11th summer addition has notched ten goals, notably bagging cathartic winners against both of Barnsley’s local rivals from Sheffield.
Watters has enjoyed a successful pre-season south of the border, writing his name on the scoresheet against Rangers in a 1-1 draw at St George’s Park.
A NATURAL GOALSCORING INSTINCT
On his second capture of the day, Dundee United Manager, Jim Goodwin, remarked: “Max is a player whom we identified as one of our top targets for the summer window, and our patience has paid off - he’ll bring a completely different dynamic to our frontline.
