Dundee United are delighted to announce the signing of Julius Eskesen from Eliteserien side FK Haugesund on two-year contract, with a club-held option of an additional 12 months.

The deal is subject to both international and SFA clearance.

Eskesen burst onto the scene with hometown Superliga outfit Odense Boldklub aged just 18 after featuring regularly for Denmark at youth level throughout his formative years.

He marked his senior debut with a match-winning header against Dalum IF in the Danish Cup to send his boyhood club into the Third Round, before registering an assist on his full bow to push Odense towards the UEFA Europa League Play-Off.

The following year, the energetic midfielder established himself as a regular fixture under Jakob Michelsen, turning out 18 times across the season as De Stribede secured their highest league finish in eight years.

After a decade at the Nature Energy Park, Eskesen called time on his stint with Odense in the summer of 2020 to link up with Sønderjyske.

Our new recruit hit the ground running in Haderslev, with his maiden term in sky blue culminating in Danish Cup glory. Eskesen netted the opening goal in the Semi-Final, then teed up Anders Jacobsen for a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

Glen Riddersholm’s men would go on to defy the odds in the Final by defeating Aalborg BK 2-0 to claim the trophy for the first time in their history.

As a result of their Sydbank Pokalen exploits, Sønderjyske and Eskesen were afforded the opportunity to embark on a continental adventure, as they clashed with European veterans Victoria Plzen in UEFA Europa League qualifying.

Our new recruit chalked up 67 appearances for SJF across three years at Sydbank Park, notching two goals and five assists in the process.

Eskesen ventured across the border to Norway in March 2022 to pen a four-year deal with Haugesund, subsequently cementing himself as a pivotal figure in the engine room

With a reputation for dazzling long-range strikes and pinpoint deliveries from dead-ball scenarios, the combative Dane has bagged ten goals and 14 assists in all competitions for the Seagulls.

The 26-year-old, who will wear the number ten shirt during his time in tangerine, is ineligible to feature in Thursday evening’s UEFA Europa Conference League Third Qualifying Round battle with Rapid Vienna, however could make his debut when the Terrors travel to Rugby Park on Sunday on Premier Sports Cup duty.

JULIUS TICKS EVERY BOX

Dundee United Manager Jim Goodwin expressed his satisfaction with Eskesen’s arrival, commenting: “Julius is another carefully considered addition who aligns with our overarching recruitment strategy - we’re targeting players with proven quality, extensive experience at a high level, and the desire to be part of a competitive and ambitious squad. Julius ticks every one of those boxes.

"He offers a rare blend of technical quality, tactical intelligence, and tenacity in the middle of the park — he doesn’t shy away from the physical side of the game, which is essential in a league as physically demanding as the Scottish Premiership."

The Irishman continued: "Julius also gives me flexibility. He can play as a deeper-lying, combative midfielder or push forward and influence the game in the final third, whilst his set-piece delivery is second to none.

“We’ve made it clear we want to construct a squad not just for the short term, but for sustained success - Julius fits that model perfectly. He’s still at a great age, he’s hungry to improve, and he’s chosen to come here because he believes in what we’re building at Dundee United.”
