Everyone at Dundee United was saddened to learn of the passing of former coach Jimmy Bone at the age of 75.

Jimmy was appointed as a coach on 24 February 1988, just two days after leaving St Mirren, to work alongside Jim McLean and Gordon Wallace.

His arrival brought an end to the United manager’s months-long search for extra support, easing the workload carried by Jim McLean and his sole full-time assistant, Gordon Wallace. Though he hadn’t applied for the role, Jimmy accepted without hesitation after the legendary Tannadice boss reached out upon learning of his availability.

Having been on the opposite bench as Alex Smith’s assistant when St Mirren defeated Dundee United in the 1987 Scottish Cup Final, Jimmy returned to Hampden the following year with his new club, as United reached a second successive final — this time against Celtic in May 1988’s showpiece.

Everyone at Dundee United would like to extend their condolences to Jimmy’s family and friends at this sad time.
