Several of Dundee United’s brightest academy talents have earned international recognition this week, with call-ups across every Scotland squad from U15 to U21 level.
No fewer than eight players will pull on the national kit, underlining the strength of United’s youth system and providing the club and supporters with plenty of reason to be proud.
It completes a busy weekend for the Academy, with a young United B team also preparing to face Peterhead in the KDM Evolution Trophy on Saturday afternoon.
Academy Director Scott Allison hailed the achievement, while acknowledging the balancing act it creates for the club in saluting deserved success against management of expectations domestically.
Speaking ahead of the latest round of KDM Evolution Trophy fixtures, Scott said: “It’s fantastic to see so many of our young players representing Scotland this week. That experience is invaluable for their development, and we’re incredibly proud of the recognition they’re getting at the national level.”
Pride in Development
United currently rank third among all UK clubs for the number of players representing Scotland at youth level – a stat that confirms the Academy’s reputation for developing talent.
“Having so many young players in Scotland squads is exciting for us as an Academy. The data we track on national team selections shows that we’re performing strongly, and that’s hugely encouraging.”
“We also have the added challenge of another KDM Evolution Trophy fixture on Saturday against League One opposition. That’s exactly the kind of test we want for our players, adding real variety to our games programme.”
“The international call-ups mean we’ll have a smaller squad for the Peterhead game, but it also opens the door for some younger Academy players to step up and taste football at a higher level,” Scott explained.
“We’ve built a clear strategy to challenge our young players against older, more experienced opponents. The KDM Evolution Trophy gives us that platform, with rules allowing B teams to play players as young as 15 years old in men’s football.”
Balancing Challenges
“While it’s a brilliant learning opportunity, we must manage expectations with such a young squad facing a seasoned League One side. Our aim is that every player enjoys the experience and takes away invaluable experience from these games.”
United’s Academy has long been committed to exposing players to new challenges, and Scott believes this weekend is another perfect example.
“Games like Saturday’s are part of the process. The first two fixtures in the competition have been excellent for the players and staff, and this will be another tough but valuable step forward in their development.”
Kick-off at the Balmoor Stadium on Saturday is set for 3pm.
