Dundee United are delighted to announce the signing of Neil Farrugia from EFL League One side Barnsley on a contract until the summer of 2028. The deal is subject to international clearance.

After spending the first seven years of his life in Paris, the wingback swapped one capital city for another as his family emigrated to Dublin, where his footballing journey would begin.

He represented various local youth sides throughout his formative years, and was earmaked as one of the  country’s most exciting prospects when he was named the FAI Schools Player of the Year for the 2016/17 campaign. Farrugia’s rise continued the following year with UCD in the UEFA Youth League, whilst balancing his on-pitch exploits with a degree in Biomedical Science at Ireland’s largest University.

Despite his eligibility to represent Malta, Spain and France, he pledged his allegiance to the Emerald Isle and netted a late winner against Serbia on his U19s debut, before featuring in further clashes with Cyprus and Czechia. 2017 also saw Farrugia excel on domestic duty, cutting his teeth in the senior game with seven appearances across the second tier and FAI Cup.

A breakthrough season would follow with UCD as they brought a four-year absence from the top flight by pipping Finn Harps to the league title on the final day, with our new recruit contributing four G/A during the run in.

Having raised eyebrows with dynamic, ambipedal displays in Leinster, Farrugia attracted numerous suitors from across the Irish Sea and earned a trial with Pep Guardiola’s star-studded Manchester City alongside current Celtic star, Liam Scales. The starlet impressed during his stint at the Etihad, however, turned down the chance to make the move permanent by prioritising the completion of his studies, upon which he joined 22-time Irish champions Shamrock Rovers.

Thus began a period of sustained glory for the Hoops, who kept a stranglehold on the League of Ireland title for a record-equalling four successive seasons. After his first 13 months and 19 outings at Tallaght, Farrugia was yet to taste defeat, and also secured an FAI Cup winners’ medal following a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Dundalk.

Domestic dominance with Shamrock brought numerous glamour ties on the European stage, with our number 20 afforded the opportunity to joust with Chelsea, AC Milan, SK Rapid Wien and Ferencvaros across the UEFA Conference, Europa and Champions League.

Adept on either flank, he regularly ranked amongst the LOI’s elite ball carriers and crossing specialists.

Farrugia also received his maiden call-up to the senior national team when Stephen Kenny, under whom he starred for the U21s, included him in a 22-man squad for a training camp in Bristol as The Boys in Green prepared for crucial Nations League battles with Greece and Gibraltar.

A centurion with Shamrock, the Irishman called the curtain on his time with the country’s most successful club in January 2025 to make his first foray into British football with EFL League One hopefuls, Barnsley. Since, Farrugia has made 30 appearances for the Oakwell outfit, notching a goal and three assists.

'VAST EXPERIENCE'

After securing the signature of his compatriot, Dundee United Manager, Jim Goodwin, said: “Neil is a player who fits our tactical framework extremely well and adds depth and quality in key areas we have been looking to strengthen.

“He is comfortable operating on both sides of the pitch and offers real value in our progression phase. He carries the ball effectively from deep, understands when to hold width, when to attack inside, and delivers accurately from good areas.

“His ability to play off either foot also allows us to avoid becoming predictable, especially against teams who defend in a low block.”

He added: “Defensively, Neil is disciplined and intelligent in his positioning. He recovers quickly in transition and is comfortable defending in one-versus-one scenarios - that balance between attacking intent and defensive responsibility is something imperative to our style of football.

“He also brings vast experience from different environments, having played almost 200 senior games back home in Ireland under the demands of consistent success, featured regularly in high-profile European competition and tested himself down south throughout the past year.

“At 26, he is at an age where he understands the game well but still has scope to improve within our structure. I’m delighted to have him at my disposal and look forward to welcoming into the dressing room ahead of this week’s Scottish Cup match.’
