Everyone at Dundee United FC was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player and coach Gordon Wallace at the age of 82.

Born on 20 June 1943, Gordon enjoyed a long and distinguished career in football and is fondly remembered for his contribution to Dundee United both on the pitch and from the dugout.

Although heavily regarded as a legend across the road with Dundee FC, Gordon joined Jim McLean at Dundee United in August 1976 following a spell playing in the United States. During his two seasons at Tannadice between 1976 and 1978, the forward made just over 50 appearances and scored 19 goals for the club.

Gordon would later return to Tannadice to take up a role on the coaching staff in 1983, working under Jim McLean during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. He served as assistant manager between 1986 and 1989, with the pinnacle coming during the club’s unforgettable run to the 1987 UEFA Cup Final.

Along the way, United defeated European giants FC Barcelona and Borussia Mönchengladbach before facing IFK Gothenburg in the two-legged final. Although the trophy ultimately went to the Swedish side, the campaign remains one of the most celebrated chapters in the club’s history.

Gordon later returned for a second spell as assistant manager between 1994 and 1998, this time working alongside Ivan Golac. That period included another historic moment for the club, as United lifted the Scottish Cup in 1994, defeating Rangers FC 1–0 at Hampden to secure the club’s famous triumph in the Hampden sunshine.

Across his time at Dundee United, Gordon was widely respected for his football knowledge, dedication and the key role he played behind the scenes during some of the club’s greatest achievements.

Everyone at Dundee United would like to extend their sincere condolences to Gordon’s wife, Marilyn, and his family and friends at this sad time.
