Danny Swanson and Garry Kenneth are the latest former Terrors confirmed for Dundee United’s squad ahead of the return of the official SPFL Tennent’s Sixes.

The iconic six-a-side tournament, which captured the imagination of Scottish football supporters throughout the 1980s and ’90s, returns to Braehead Arena on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October with the official backing of the SPFL.

All 12 Premiership clubs will take part in the legends tournament, with former favourites pulling on their clubs’ current kits once again.

Swanson and Kenneth join Prince Buaben, Craig Easton, Morgaro Gomis, Paul Dixon and Andy McLaren in the United squad, with further names set to be announced ahead of next month’s tournament.

DANNY SWANSON

2008–12, 127 appearances, 12 goals

Born in Edinburgh, Danny Swanson played youth football with Hutchison Vale before representing Leith Athletic and Berwick Rangers.

The midfielder joined Dundee United for £40,000 in January 2008 and became a regular during his four seasons in tangerine, with his creativity, close control and ability to produce spectacular goals making him a popular figure among the United support.

Swanson played an important role in the successful 2009/10 campaign and started at Hampden Park as the Terrors defeated Ross County 3-0 to lift the Scottish Cup.

After making 127 appearances and scoring 12 goals, he joined Peterborough United upon the expiry of his contract in 2012. Swanson later represented Coventry City, St Johnstone, Hearts, Hibernian and East Fife.

GARRY KENNETH

2005–12, 193 appearances, seven goals

Dundee-born Garry Kenneth played for Fairmuir Boys Club before progressing through Dundee United’s youth development programme.

The commanding centre-half made his competitive debut against Queen of the South in February 2005 and established himself as a first-team regular after a brief loan spell with Cowdenbeath.

Kenneth became a key member of the United defence and started the 2010 Scottish Cup final, helping the Terrors keep a clean sheet as they defeated Ross County 3-0 at Hampden Park.

His performances in tangerine also earned him senior international recognition with Scotland. Kenneth departed for Bristol Rovers following the expiry of his contract in 2012, having made 193 appearances and scored seven goals for United.

United have been drawn in Group B alongside Aberdeen, St Johnstone and city rivals Dundee.

The tournament begins with three regionalised groups of four on Saturday. Each group winner and runner-up will progress to the knockout stages alongside the two best third-placed teams.

Every match will have a winner, with a bonus point awarded for a penalty shootout victory if the scores are level. The famous sin bin will also make its return as the competition combines nostalgia with a modern twist.

Tickets and further information are available via the official SPFL Tennent’s Sixes website.
