Dundee United are delighted to announce the signing of Scotland international Johnny Russell on a short-term deal until the end of the season, subject to international and SFA clearance.
A product of the youth system at Tannadice, a fresh-faced Russell burst onto the tangerine scene in 2010 following successful loan stints with Forfar Athletic and Raith Rovers.

During his smash-hit debut campaign, the 20-year-old established himself as one of Scottish football’s hottest prospects with nine top-flight strikes as the Terrors secured a fourth-placed finish and a spot in the UEFA Europa League Qualifiers.
Subsequently, became a mainstay of Peter Houston’s side thanks to his metronomic goalscoring exploits and endeared himself to the United faithful with memorable braces against Dundee and Rangers.

He departed the City of Discovery with the most prolific strike rate of any United forward in the modern era after a scintillating 2012/13 term, boasting a phenomenal goals-to-game ratio of 0.53.
Since, Russell has enjoyed a storied career both in the English Championship with Derby County and Stateside, where he captained Sporting Kansas City to Western Conference glory. The 35-year-old has also earned 14 caps for Scotland across the past decade, and opened his international account against San Marino in UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying.

Having netted on 69 occasions during his time in the MLS, the Glasweigan is now the highest scoring Scot to lace up a pair of boots in the USA, surpassing former Chelsea and Colarado Rapids hero John Spencer’s tally in 2021.
Russell, who will wear the number 77 shirt, is now set to make an emotional return to where it all began as he looks to spark United’s campaign back into life.
WE BELIEVE HE CAN PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE
After bolstering his attacking options for the run-in with a marquee arrival, Dundee United Manager, Jim Goodwin said: “I’m thrilled to get this deal over the line - Johnny brings a wealth of experience thanks to a phenomenal career both domestically and abroad.

“His connection with the supporters is incredible and he understands unequivocally what it means to represent Dundee United.
“From a footballing perspective, he gives us something different in the final third. His movement, decision-making and his ability to influence big moments in matches are all qualities that come from years of playing at the highest level.
He continued: “Furthermore, his presence around the dressing room will be hugely beneficial for the wider group. He sets standards naturally through the way he trains and looks after himself - that will be invaluable for our younger players.

“This is a move that makes sense for both sides. Johnny is determined to make an impact and we believe he can play an important role for us during this crucial period of the season.”
