United claimed another three points off Dundee this afternoon to take their SPL tally this season over their city rivals to two wins and two draws. The only goal of the match came close on half time from an own goal by Lee Wilkie.
The Tangerines deserved their result generally out-battling and out-playing a lacklustre home side who had come in to this match on a run of four wins out of their previous five games. Despite being available for selection, Jamie McCunnie could only find a place on the bench with Stuart Duff holding onto the right full back position. There was a place in the side for Jim Paterson who lined up in the left wing position.
The first half was fairly even although United played better football with the game being played essentially in the Dundee half. Up by a goal at the break, United survived a penalty claim for handball against McCracken early in the second half however thereafter the Dens Park side rarely threatened Paul Gallacher with Charlie Miller again the outstanding player on the park by a length. Steven Thompson should have scored when he was clean through on Speroni while Derek Lilley also had a superb chance but shot over.
In an atmosphere largely dominated by the sell-out away end, the United players celebrated at the final whistle in front of their supporters as the Tannadice side climbed above Dundee and into 8th position. The result means that neither Hibernian and Motherwell can climb above United this season guaranteeing Alex Smith's side a minimum 9th place in the SPL although 7th position remains within reach.
