SMITH DISAPPOINTED AT LOST OPPORTUNITY

12th August 2002

In an interview on Monday afternoon, Manager Alex Smith expressed his disappointment with Saturday's result against Kilmarnock: "I feel we played very well and offered an exciting game of football yet could not take anything from the match even though we had taken the lead and had dominated the game. It was very frustrating to lose all three points in a match that we could and should have won. We thought we had set up a win when Thompson put us ahead with an excellent goal. But slack defending allied with outstanding efforts by Doig and Dargo meant we failed to live up to our potential. As always, the moral of the story is that if you don't defend the game properly it is almost a certainty that you will be defeated."

"On the positive side, we had some fine performances from a lot of players - the two young full-backs Duff and McCunnie (pictured) were yet again on sterling form and Steven Thompson was outstanding. Not only did he score but his overall contribution was first class. There is no doubt that Steven, if he continues to show this kind of new maturity in his game, is fast developing into one of the Club's top strikers."
