UNITE-IN-FITBALL COMMUNITY UPDATE

13th August 2002

The summer holiday programme has now drawn to a close following last week's successful and extremely popular Dundee United Soccer Festival which attracted over 100 enthusiastic children. Throughout the summer, children attending SFA and Dundee United FC Courses have received fruit and water to promote the healthy lifestyle that is required to fulfil one's sporting potential. The coaches have been working hard to encourage children to re-hydrate at water breaks whilst explaining the importance of fluid intake during participation in football. Despite mixed weather conditions over the summer programme, a few warm and hot days were experienced in which regular water breaks were taken to balance the fluids lost through sweat and exercise. Hundreds of water bottles were also distributed during the coaching courses and children should remember to carry with them one or two bottles of water or juice (non-fizzy) for any sporting venture.

The SFA 12s Development Squad have also been working hard during two training days at Gussie Park last week in preparation for the new season's Youth Programme. Players were provided with fruit and water each session and understand that eating fruit provides a prime source of the vitamins and carbohydrate intake needed to excel in sport. This project is officially endorsed by Scotland Against Drugs and special thanks goes to our project partners Les Turriff wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Merchants and Barr Softdrinks for their help in supplying fruit and water for the children.
