UNDER 21S DRAW WITH RANGERS

26th August 2002

The United Under 21s kicked off their 2002-2003 campaign at Tannadice against Rangers against the backdrop of a superb late summer's evening. United featured first team squad members David McCracken, Stephen Carson, Stephen O'Donnell, David Winters, Arnar Gunnlaugsson and Jim Paterson. The visitors had former United goal hero Billy Dodds in their line up along with Maurice Ross, Bert Konterman and Russell Latapy.

United played well in the first half with a superb Gunnlaugsson goal giving the Tangerines a half time lead. Within minutes of the restart, Dodds put the Ibrox side on level terms. It took only a matter of minutes before United had regained their one goal superiority when Gunnlaugsson played a ball into the Rangers penalty box that was cleverly chested down into the path of Jim Paterson who blasted a superb strike past Montgomery and into the net. United's lead lasted until the final minutes of the match when Rangers were awarded a free kick when the Referee penalised Paul Jarvie for holding onto the ball too long. From the resultant free kick, Konterman fired in a ferocious shot through the United defensive wall to level the game.

The match finished 2-2 which was hard on United, especially in the manner in which Rangers equalised almost on full time.
