MORE INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR UNITED PLAYERS

22nd August 2002

Dundee United's record of supplying players for the various national sides was further enhanced yesterday and on Tuesday evening when two more Tangerine stars gained further recognition at Scottish international level.

United hitman Steven Thompson earned his fourth Scotland cap yesterday evening in the 0-1 defeat by Denmark at Hampden Park. Steven, top scorer for the Tangerines last term and United's only scorer in their three Bank of Scotland Premier League matches to date, played from the start and was substituted around the hour mark. He was the closest to netting for Vogts's side when he was sent through on goal only to be apparently pulled back by the Danish defender in an incident that should arguably have led to a Scotland penalty. Tommo commented after the match, "it was a disappointing performance but it was against high quality opposition. We must now turn our attention to getting a result against the Faroe Islands in two weeks time. As far as friendlies go, I feel that it is better to play against quality opposition and learn from the match than to play against weaker sides. I was disappointed at not getting a penalty when I was brought down in the Danish penalty box."

On Tuesday evening, Jamie McCunnie played for the Scottish Under 21 side against their Danish rivals at East End Park in a 1-1 draw. Jamie saved the day for the young Scots by clearing a certain Danish goal off the line in the dying seconds of the match.
