A last minute winner from Jim McIntyre gave United their first win over Kilmarnock in nineteen matches and took the Tangerines off the bottom of the premierleague.
Paul Hegarty rang the changes in his fourth United team selection with Mark Wilson lining up alongside David McCracken, there being no place in the sixteen for Kevin McGowne. Jamie McCunnie and Stuart Duff again lined up in the wing back roles providing the Tangerines with an extremely youthful back four. Derek Lilley played just off the front two of Steven Thompson and the recalled Jim Hamilton. Also in the middle were Easton, Miller and McIntyre.
UNITED: GALLACHER, MCCUNNIE, WILSON, MCCRACKEN, DUFF, EASTON, MILLER, MCINTYRE, LILLEY, HAMILTON AND THOMPSON.
Following initial early exchanges, United took the lead when Thompson took advantage of a defensive slip and fired home to put United ahead. Tommo's 7th minute strike was his tenth goal of the campaign.
The goal seemed to fire up the Rugby Park side and it came as no surprise when they equalised in the 24th minute, Fulton firing a low shot past Gallacher from just outside the box. Killie continued to dominate and it was a relief for the Tangerines to go in level at the break.
HALF-TIME: KILMARNOCK 1 UNITED 1
Kilmarnock picked up where they left off after the interval but they could not force the breakthrough. There appeared to be two turning points in the second period. The hitting of the post by Kilmarnock from a free kick and the substitutions made by United when Smart replaced Hamilton and Paterson replaced Duff. United came more and more into the game following their player changes and they began to look the more likely team to score a winner.
With the match heading for a draw, a Killie headed clearance in the 89th minute actually flew backwards and landed at McIntyre who blasted into the ball past Marshall from close range.
In the end, it proved to be a significant result. With Partick Thistle defeating Motherwell, United could have been almost detached at the foot of the league table had they taken nothing from this match. The win took the Tangerines off the bottom moving them up one place, the three points all the more special having been taken against a side from whom United had taken so very little in recent years.
