MCCALL ERA KICKS OFF WITH HOME WIN

1st February 2003

An attendance of almost seven thousand comprising only a few hundred visiting supporters provided Tannadice with an excellent atmosphere for Ian McCall's first game in charge, the crucial bottom of the table clash with Motherwell.

McCall rang the changes with his first team selection and none more so than with the goalkeeping position as in came Alan Combe to replace the well established Paul Gallacher.

UNITED: COMBE, CHIARINI, TOD, BOLLAN, MCCRACKEN, EASTON, MILLER, MCINTYRE, DUFF, DODDS (C), SMART. SUBS: GALLACHER, LILLEY, WILSON, O'DONNELL, HAMILTON.

MOTHERWELL: WOODS, KINNIBURGH, PARTRIDGE, VAUGHAN, CORRIGAN, ADAMS, LEITCH, PEARSON, HAMMELL, CRAIG, CLARKSON. SUBS: EWINGS, FAGAN, LASLEY, OFFIONG, COWAN.

United got off to the best possible start with an Andy Tod goal on his home debut in just five minutes. A dramatic beginning however much more was to follow when Adams equalised from the penalty spot in the twentieth minute as Alan Combe was red carded for bringing down Clarkson who had intercepted a Tod pass back.

Gallacher was brought on to replace Combe with Smart replaced. There was no further scoring in the first half. With just over twenty minutes remaining, Man of the Match Charlie Miller put the Tangerines back in front and despite some tense moments before the final whistle, ten man United held on to secure their first home league win of the season and move ahead of their opponents in the SPL table.
