Tonight, two young United and Celtic sides lined up at Tannadice for what turned out to be a highly entertaining, incident-packed encounter. The young Dundee United side had the lead twice during regulation time, and then again in extra time, and even led the penalty shoot-out before Celtic came out on top.
From the kick-off Celtic looked the more likely to score, but it was United who took the lead through Calum Hardie's low driven shot on six minutes. Five minutes later the lead was doubled, when Stephen McGowan (pictured), currently averaging around a goal a game, intercepted a short pass back and then rounded the Celtic goalkeeper to score from a tight angle. A Celtic goal quickly followed from a Lawson free-kick, and then on the half our mark, the visitors equalised when Beattie burst into the box to score. Despite intense Celtic pressure United regained the lead, with McGowan scoring his second just before half time.
Fifteen minutes into the second half United restored a two-goal advantage, when Kenny Jarvis hit a well-taken free kick into the Celtic net from twenty yards. This served to spur Celtic into action again and they went on the offensive, hitting woodwork more than once before reducing the leeway to one through Low, and then levelling the match again through Arbuckle with only five minutes left. This took the game into extra time and with five minutes played, Stephen McGowan completed a memorable hat trick, beating Marshall from 10 yards out. Both sides then hit the woodwork before Arbuckle headed home to bring the score level at 5-5, a few minutes before the final whistle.
The contest now had to be decided with a penalty shoot-out, and after three attempts each United had the upper hand at 3-2. Celtic then levelled before Paul Allum missed the target, and with their final attempt, Celtic scored again to lead 4-3. John McMenemy, taking United's last kick, had his attempt saved and Celtic won through to the next round. To be fair, it was a victory that Celtic just merited on the night, but it was hard on a United team who had played exceptionally well.
