TANGERINES OFF THE BOTTOM

9th March 2003

Ian McCall was able to field the same starting eleven that beat Dunfermline 3-0 the previous week. With a travelling support of around 600 giving the Terrors good backing, the game got under way with Hibs on the offensive, and it took only three minutes for the home side to go into the lead. McManus took a knock down from Paatelainen on the edge of the box and unleashed an unstoppable volley beyond Gallacher, and into the bottom left of the net. Jim Paterson missed a golden opportunity to equalise in ten minutes when he found himself unmarked in the box, but his downward header bounced past the post.

United had the better of the first half with several players trying their luck, but they were unable to find the target. Hibs were causing a few problems with high balls into the danger area, but Gallacher was never seriously troubled, and the home side were restricted to a handful of shots, all of which were either wide or over the top.

The second half opened with United still the more likely side, and the introduction of Carson and Dodds gave the visiting support plenty to shout about. Carson was causing havoc down the right and his crosses into the box were severely testing the Hibs defence. However, it was a cross from the left, from the foot of Jim Paterson, met by Jim McIntyre (pictured), to give United a deserved equaliser. United had a good penalty claim turned aside by the referee as the Tangerines continued to press the Hibs defence. Dodds and Duff both had chances to win the game but in the end the Tannadice side had to settle for a point.
