Dundee United is to honour the memory of former Manager Jerry Kerr by naming the Main Stand at Tannadice after him.
The decision by the Board of Directors to name the Main Stand, "The Jerry Kerr Stand" follows a request from the Federation of Dundee United Supporters' Clubs to honour the former Manager for his outstanding contribution in laying the foundations of success at the Club.
The ceremony will take place during the half time interval at the pre-season friendly against Everton on Wednesday 30th July 2003. It will be attended by members of the Kerr family and former players from the Kerr era at Tannadice.
Jerry Kerr who died in 1999 was also a former Captain of the Club, and was Manager of United from 1959 to 1971. After a two-year spell as General Manager, he left United in 1973. Within a year of his appointment he took the Club from third bottom of the then Division Two to Division One - for the first time in 27 years.
During his time as Manager attendances quadrupled partly due to shrewd transfer dealings including the introduction of exciting Scandinavian players into the Scottish game. He led the Club into European competition in 1966, which at that time was an astonishing achievement and still remains a landmark in the Club's history.
Derek Robertson, a Dundee United Director said, "It is difficult to over-estimate the contribution Jerry Kerr made to the Club. Basically he led us out of obscurity into an established position in Division One and into European football. His tenure undoubtedly laid the foundations upon which Jim McLean was able to build and then take the Club onto an even higher level. This recognition is long overdue and much deserved. We would appeal to as many supporters as possible to attend the game as a mark of respect to his memory."
Eddie Thompson, Chairman of Dundee United said, "I am delighted that Jerry Kerr is being recognised in this manner. I can also confirm that I have spoken with Jim McLean and due recognition of the contribution that he made to the Club will be made at an appropriate time in the foreseeable future."
