DUMBARTON V UNITED DRAW

2nd August 2003

Following the midweek success over Premiership top six side Everton in front of an attendance of 6,500, this afternoon United played out a difficult scoreless draw against Scottish Second Division side Dumbarton who finished sixth last term. The trim 2,020 capacity Strathclyde Homes Stadium was a pleasant setting for the match however the lack of atmosphere in front of the small crowd perhaps contributed to the less inspired performance from the Tangerines.

Manager Ian McCall made many changes throughout the match however he played most of his first team squad at some point with midweek hero Samuel (pictured) starting off up front along with Dodds. Chances were limited against a very determined Dumbarton side and the match is likely to give Ian McCall some food for thought before the season kicks off for real next Saturday against visitors Hibernian.

United have now completed a mixture of pre-season matches with a win in a closed door match at Hampden against Queen's Park, a draw and a defeat on their European warm up trip, a second half demolition of Airdrie United, the aforementioned win over Everton and then this afternoon's hard fought 0-0.

A large Tannadice attendance is anticipated in seven days time with United season ticket sales continuing to perform ahead of last term's figures. Next Saturday's visitors Hibs lost out at home today 0-1 to city rivals Hearts in the inaugural Festival Cup. Despite the reverse, Bobby Williamson's team are likely to bring through a big support in seven days' time with the atmosphere at Tannadice set to be electric.
