UNDER-21s HAVE TO SETTLE FOR A POINT

15th September 2003

In the first Under-21 match to be played at Tannadice this season United lined up with a side consisting mainly of young players with first team experience. Only Andy Hunter, Steven Anderson and Graeme Holmes were lacking any first team outings.

In a hectic opening to the first half United were caught offside three times in as many minutes as the Tangerines were having a lot of success down the left. For the visitors, Ipova hit the side netting and Gallacher was happy to tip over a dangerous hanging cross from Walker. Miller fired weakly at the United goal and the keeper gathered easily, as he did with a couple of long-range efforts. United had more than their share of chances with Coyle firing well over the top and the best chance of the half probably fell to Robson who broke through only for the keeper to deny him a shooting opportunity.

United changed things around a bit after the break with McGowan coming on in place of Hunter and the game picked up where it left off with some lively play. Scotland pulled a shot wide early in the half but it was the visitors who took a lead when Paul McLaughlin went on a solo run which ended with a shot across goal and beyond Gallacher. United responded through Robson who skimmed the top of the net from 25 yards and the Livingston keeper then saved a powerful low 35-yard drive from the same player. For the visitors Camacho wasted two good chances from free-kicks but with fifteen minutes left, United grabbed a deserved equaliser when Scotland took a long pass on the right and beat the defence to cross in for Coyle (pictured). The veteran striker was forced to the by line and looked to have run out of options but he somehow managed to turn and fire into the net from a seemingly impossible angle.

So it ended 1-1 and after the match Owen Coyle said, "I was disappointed that we didn't win the game as we had a number of good chances to score. All it needed was better finishing from our lads. We had some good performances, with Mark Kerr outstanding and Barry Robson playing well. There were a lot of positives to take from the game despite not getting the win which I felt we more than deserved."
