THIRD ROUND SCOTTISH CUP EXIT FOR UNITED

10th January 2004

United travelled to Dunfermline today to face the Fife side in the Scottish Cup for only the fourth time in the Club's history and, having won all three of the previous ties, United went down 3-1 to the Pars to give them their first taste of Scottish Cup success against the Tangerines.

The Tannadice side were without several key players for this match making way for Under-19 Captain Steven Anderson on the bench for the first time along with midfielder Graeme Holmes. A first minute injury to David McCracken meant the side had to reshuffled after only 20 minutes. By then however, the home side had already taken the lead from a Crawford close range effort and ten minutes before half time the deficit was doubled after Crawford again scored, capitalising on a defensive slip. The travelling United support were given some home when Derek McInnes pulled one back with a well struck volley only three minutes later but five minutes into the second half Brewster restored the Pars two goal lead when he started and finished a sweeping move.

United did have a couple of good chances to score but Billy Dodds was unlucky to see Stillie clutch a far post headed to his chest and then Charlie Millar had even worse luck as his header beat the keeper from the same position but it rebounded to safety off the post. United finished quite strongly but there was to be no comeback and Dunfermline go forward to play Clyde in the next round.
