MATCH REPORT | A PROMOTION PARTY AT TANNADICE

United's Under-21 side made the first of two away trips this week when they travelled to Easter Road to play Hibernian this evening.
Owen Coyle fielded a very young side in a 4-4-2 formation with Paul Jarvie in goal behind a back four of Stuart Abbot, Steven Anderson, Ross Gardiner and Jim Paterson. In midfield were Graeme Holmes, Steven Bell, Kenny Jarvis and Mark Kerr with the Trinidadian striking partnership of Jason Scotland and Collin Samuel up front. Hibs also had their fair share of young players but generally their side was the more experienced on view.
The game was decided by a single goal scored by Scotland in the first half, when he latched on to a great through ball and burst forward to slot past the keeper. The same player had another opportunity from a header and Jarvis might have scored with a sweetly struck volley. Mark Kerr played only the first half and was replaced by David Robertson at half time. United had a couple of chances to increase the lead in the second period but in the end one was enough to give the Tangerines all three points
After the match Owen Coyle was happy with the outcome and he said, "We put out a very young side and the boys thoroughly deserved the win. They did exceptionally well and we were delighted with the application and effort they gave. Some of their play was very high quality. The oldest player in midfield was Mark Kerr who is still not twenty-one, and he played his part, setting an example for the younger boys and helping them. In the second half Graeme Holmes took on that role and he too did well."
On Wednesday afternoon, Owen Coyle's young side will be in action again when they take on Hearts at Forthbank Stadium with a 2.00 pm kick-off.
