UNDER-21s LOSE TO PARTICK

18th February 2004

In this rescheduled match at Tannadice tonight, United made six changes from the side that beat Celtic at Forfar two days ago. Scott Paterson came in to the defence for his first game since going out through injury against Celtic in the second match of the new season. Gary Kenneth was making his debut at this level after impressing recently in the Youth side.

There was little cheer for United in the first half with the visitors creating the better chances and they went ahead when English took a cute back-heeled pass and fired into the net. Paterson played the first forty-five minutes and was very effective at the back.

The second half saw a better performance from United but Thistle went further ahead when English netted from a free kick. In the last twenty minutes or so the Tangerines were the stronger side and Smith scored from close range after the keeper failed to hold an Anderson header from a corner and immediately after that McLaren powered in a strong header only to see Pinkowski in goal finger tip the effort over the bar. With three minutes left however the Jags grabbed a third when McBride slotted home after a break from defence.
