OWN GOAL AGONY AT TYNECASTLE

21st February 2004

In a very entertaining first half, Samuel had a great shot saved by Gordon before Hearts took the lead, Hartley finishing a three man move with quarter of an hour gone. The game flowed from end to end and both sides had chances. United gained most of their opportunities from free kicks and the Hearts keeper made two excellent saves from Mark Wilson whilst at the other end Paul Gallacher made an equal number of fine saves.

United started the second half well and McIntyre scored a great equaliser from a tight angle. United continued to press but Hearts went back in front against the run of play after De Vries got a huge slice of luck when he hit a shot well off target only for the unfortunate Mark Wilson to deflect the ball agonisingly into his own net. The game ended as a contest when McKenna netted a third for Hearts and despite playing with three up front United could find no way back.
