TEN MAN UNITED WIN UNDER-19 DERBY

27th March 2004

North End Park was the venue for the Under-19's second derby of the season and with United looking for revenge for a defeat earlier this season, the young Tangerines were in determined mood. The home side lined up with Gavin McCann in goal behind a back four of Stuart Abbot, Gary Kenneth, Steven Anderson and Ross Gardiner. In midfield Barry Callaghan, Eddie Smith and David Robertson were joined by Nicky McDonald who was playing off the front partnership of Aaron Conway and Joe Andrew.

United were very much in charge in the first half and had chances before taking the lead on twenty minutes. Robertson was the scorer when he slotted home a flick on from Kenneth after a long throw. The Dark Blues pulled one back on the half hour mark and the sides went in level at half time.

The second half began as the first had ended with United on top and passing the ball around very comfortably. Aaron Conway was red carded for a second bookable offence only ten minutes into the second period but United continued to show tremendous spirit and were in control, creating several goal-scoring opportunities. The winner came with only three minutes left. Substitute Kenny Jarvis went on one of his trade mark mazy runs and beat four players and was just about to pull the trigger when he was brought down in the box. Andrew netted the resultant penalty.

After the match a delighted Tony Docherty had nothing but praise for the players. He said "I thought we dominated for most of the match, even when we went down to ten men and overall the team performance was excellent. We outplayed them football wise and out battled them competitively and thoroughly deserved full points."
