ROBSON GOAL MAKES A POINT

15th March 2004

United travelled to Firhill this afternoon to meet Partick Thistle and the home side had the better chances but failed to turn their superiority into goals against a United side whose performance was described afterwards by the Manager as poor.

The Tangerines never got going in the first half and had only two chances. The first, a near thing early on from Andy McLaren who intercepted a slack back pass but fired wide and then an Alan Archibald shot that missed narrowly from a free kick. Thistle had the ball in the net after Britton's shot came back off the bar but Mitchell was offside and Bonnes had a shot cleared off the line before Milne headed wide.

In the second half both Gibson and Bonnes hit woodwork before Rowson ran half the length of the pitch before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Gallacher mid way through the half. It took United only two minutes to draw level when Barry Robson displayed his ability at set pieces with a stunning goal from a free kick. The action continued with Fleming hitting the post for Thistle and a great save from Gallacher from a free kick. And right at the end, substitute Billy Dodds almost grabbed an unlikely winner but his shot went into the side netting.
