Aberdeen's injury problems saw a predominantly young side with two Under-16 youth players, Brian Neill and Mark Robertson in the squad to face United in this afternoon's Under-21 encounter. The Tangerines also had a large Youth contingent on show with only Paul Jarvie and Jim Paterson over the age of nineteen. With Jarvie in goal behind a 4-4-2 formation, the back four were Barry Callaghan, Stuart Abbot, Steven Anderson and Kenny Jarvis. In the midfield area Aaron Conway was in the wide right position with William Easton on the opposite flank and Steven Bell with Graeme Holmes in the middle. Jim Paterson and Joe Andrew were the striking partnership.
In a match more or less totally controlled by the Tangerines who created a number of chances, it was Aberdeen who went ahead in a rare attack against the run of play. But by half time the sides were level after Andrew put the finishing touch to an Easton effort. The second half saw the home side limited to one shot on target whilst United applied a lot of pressure and created several scoring opportunities to secure two more goals. Easton scored with a twenty five yard thunderbolt and then Jarvis netted from the narrowest of angles after taking a pass from a short corner.
After three games without finding the net, Owen Coyle was naturally delighted to see the side take all three points from a difficult venue. He said "The boys have played well lately without scoring goals and today they showed what they can do by getting three and they could so easily have scored even more. We are delighted with what these young lads have achieved and, over the last few months, they have shown good progress."
