UNITED WIN 4-2

31st July 2004

United boss Ian McCall made three changes to the starting line up which faced Blackpool on Wednesday evening, with David McCracken, Billy Dodds and Andy McLaren all handed starting places. Most notable amongst the Den Haag line up was winger Jamie Smith who was recently at Celtic. After the defeat to Blackpool in midweek United were looking for a morale boosting performance before the new season begins one week from now at Dunfermline.

Den Haag, who play in the Netherlands top flight, were first to make an impression on the match and opened the scoring after 8 minutes. Jamie Smith's corner was headed powerfully off the underside of the bar and into the net by centre back Jan Paul Saeijs, with United goalkeeper Bullock helpless. United took only 4 minutes however to level the scoreline, with a Barry Robson cross from the right being glanced into the bottom corner by Chris Innes. After the 34th minute United moved 2-1 in front when Mark Kerr finished coolly after some excellent link up play involving new recruit James Grady and the lively Robson. The Terrors moved 3-1 ahead on 42 minutes with Grady showing great instinct to touch a huge clearance from Bullock towards goal and wrong footing the Den Haag keeper to score.

Victory was all but sealed for United 7 minutes into the second half after Grady and Robson again linked up well, with the latter rounding De Vries before being upended in the box. Referee Alan Freeland didn't hesitate in awarding the penalty which was placed into the bottom right corner with real conviction by Billy Dodds. With half an hour of the game remaining the visitors pulled a goal back after striker Roy Stroeve finished neatly when clear of the United defence. Although both sides had chances before the final whistle, there were no further goals and the game finished 4-2 to United.

Overall this was a very good workout for the Tangerines against a side who played some very precise passing football at times. The fact that the team scored four goals and secured a well deserved win should build confidence ahead of the new season and in particular the performances of Kerr, Robson and Grady were huge plusses. Credit must also go to Den Haag, who made a significant contribution to an entertaining game.
