UNITED NOTCH WIN AT TURF MOOR

17th July 2004

Ian McCall made three changes from the line-up versus Bolton; in came James Grady, Graeme Holmes and Collin Samuel for Jim McIntyre, Andy McLaren and Derek McInnes. Billy Dodds was wearinng the captain's armband.

In front of an attendance of 4,167 which included a good few hundred Arabs, United opened brightly and went ahead in three minutes through Robson who netted from the edge of the box. The match flowed from end to end, with Chaplow firing wide before Blake levelled the match from a free-kick in 26 minutes and Burnley had one ruled offside. James Grady then made it 2-1 for United in 32 minutes and both he and Barry Robson came close a few more times before the break. At the other end, Bullock made a good catch from a dangerous cross and United deservedly were ahead at half-time.

The second half saw no further goals but plenty of entertainment, particularly for the United support. Jim McIntyre almost scored early in the half and later another shot just drifted over. United might also have had a penalty. Burnley were not inactive, however, and Bullock had to make three important saves, one of these he brilliantly finger-tipped over the bar.

Overall, Ian McCall will be happy with the outcome and he managed to make six substitutions in the course of the match. It was a good passing game on display, and the travelling Arabs left happy.
