Tony Docherty and his Under-19 players travelled ahead of the United first team party today to Kilmarnock where they met Killie's Youth side at Auchincruve. The young Tangerines continued their good run of performances but on this occasion they obtained just reward for their efforts with a 2-0 win.
In a departure from the normal pattern, the side lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with Euan McLean in goal behind a back four of Stuart Abbot, Garry Kenneth, Ross Gardiner and William Easton. The midfield trio consisted of Gregg Burnett, David Robertson and Nicky McDonald, whilst up front Joe Andrew played through the middle supported by Kieran McAleenan on the left and Barry Callaghan on the right.
The sides were fairly evenly matched in the opening ten minutes but then United took charge, creating several chances and the only surprise was that it took fully half an hour to get in front. The only goal of the first half came from a Callaghan corner that was met by Gardiner to put United in front. The visitors should really have been two up at the break but the referee ruled that a Robertson shot had rebounded from a post when it looked more like it had gone into the net and ricocheted back from the upper stanchion.
United continued to dominate play for all but a few minutes of the second period and the hard work the players put in resulted in a second goal to seal the win. Robertson was the scorer, running through from midfield to finish with a well placed shot slipped beyond the advancing keeper.
After the match Tony Docherty said, "I feel that the players did very well today and fully deserved the win. As it has been in the last few games, we should have scored more because we were in complete control for most of the time. I was delighted with the whole team's effort and it was pleasing to see the back four keep a clean sheet today. It was a very good, positive performance with the right outcome for us."
