SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD DAY OF ACTION

27th October 2004

For the first time all 42 professional clubs have been involved in anti-racist actions over the last two weeks, hammering home the message that racism is unacceptable both in football, and on a day-to-day basis in our communities.

Undoubtedly, the campaign has had some major successes since it began working full-time in Scotland last November - some of these successes have been high-profile, others behind the scenes, where much progress has been made in stamping racism out of the professional game.

However, racist attacks continue to rise in Scottish society. Football is a powerful medium to break down the barriers of ignorance which lead to racist attacks. That's why Show Racism the Red Card (SRTRC) have been delighted by the response shown by SPL players over the last year, attending our events, launches and giving up their own free time for interviews to get the message across that racism has no place in Scotland.

Fans organisations from several clubs have been proactive in launching their own anti-racist projects over the fortnight to send out a clear message that racists aren't welcome within their ranks. James Proctor of Supporters Direct, the Supporters Trusts Initiative, on his organisation's support for the SRTRC campaign:

"Supporters' Trusts are democratic and community based organisations and the people who are involved in them care deeply about the health of their local community. Individually and collectively we fully support the SRTRC campaign and its anti-racism message. We actively encourage people to come together to ensure that football welcomes all people to participate, regardless of creed, colour or religion."

In the Scottish Premierleague, all 12 clubs have also been working with SRTRC. SPL secretary Iain Blair comments, "All of our member clubs are tackling the problem of racism on a number of levels. Strategies such as community programmes, supporters' charters and inclusive marketing campaigns are being used to install the values of equality and tolerance among Scottish football fans on one hand, while on the other hand our safety officers are working hard behind the scenes with the police and stewards to eradicate racism on the terraces.

This month's SRTRC campaign builds upon the SPL's involvement last season and we believe that this co-ordinated approach will help break down some of the barriers that remain in football and society in general."

Dundee United has been particularly proactive in promoting anti racist initiatives, as evidenced by the Club's own Anti Racism policy which has been adopted by the SFA as a best practice example. Together with ArabTRUST, the Dundee United Supporters' Trust, the Club will be erecting a permanent anti racist and anti sectarianism banner hoarding in the stadium to emphasise the importance of the campaign and will be hosting an anti racism seminar for local school children in November.

SRTRC and Dundee United would like to thank fans for supporting the campaign over the last year, and hope that many more supporters will get actively involved in the campaign over this season.
